WHAT ARE SEALS AND WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR? MATERIALS AND DESIGNS

The sealing joints are essential elements in any mechanical or industrial system that needs to prevent leakage of fluids or gases. From the food industry to the automotive industry, seals are used in a wide variety of applications.

In this article, we will explore the different aspects of gaskets, from their definition and types to their installation and maintenance. We will also look at the latest innovations in gasket materials and designs, and address some of the common problems that can arise when using these elements.

WHAT ARE SEALS AND WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

Sealing gaskets are components that are placed between two surfaces to prevent fluids or gases from escaping. These gaskets are used in everything from internal combustion engines to natural gas piping systems. Some common examples of sealing gasket applications include:

Automotive industry: Sealing gaskets are used in exhaust systems, fuel systems, cooling systems and transmission systems of vehicles to prevent gas or liquid leaks and ensure efficient and safe operation of the vehicle.

Chemical and petrochemical industry: Gaskets are essential in the chemical and petrochemical industry to prevent leakage of corrosive, toxic or flammable chemicals in processing equipment such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers and reactors.

Food and beverage industry: Seals are used in food and beverage processing and packaging equipment to prevent contamination and ensure the quality and safety of food products.

Pharmaceutical industry: Seals are critical in the pharmaceutical industry to maintain a sterile environment and prevent contamination of pharmaceutical products during the manufacturing and packaging process.

Power generation industry: Sealing gaskets are used in power generation systems, such as gas turbines, boilers and piping systems, to prevent fluid leakage and ensure safe and efficient operation of equipment.

TYPES OF SEALING GASKETS: MATERIALS AND DESIGNS

There are many different types of sealing jointsThe choice of the appropriate gasket type will depend on several factors, including the type of fluid or gas being sealed, the temperature and pressure of the system, and the geometry of the surfaces being joined.

Some of the most common materials used in the manufacture of sealing gaskets include rubber, Teflon, neoprene, and silicone.

In terms of design, sealing gaskets can have different shapes and configurations, such as flat gaskets, O-rings, lip gaskets, spiral wound gaskets, O-rings, among others. The design of the sealing gasket depends on the specific application and the sealing requirements needed.

Soft material seals: These gaskets are made of flexible materials such as rubber, neoprene, EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer), Nitrile, Viton, among others. They are widely used in low pressure and moderate temperature applications, and are used to seal flat or mating surfaces on flanges, access covers, pump housings, pipe connections and other equipment.

Metallic sealing gaskets: These gaskets are made of metallic materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, copper and special alloys. They are suitable for high temperature, high pressure and extreme operating conditions. They are used in applications such as high pressure flanges, pipe connections, heat exchangers, exhaust systems and transmission systems.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) seals: PTFE is a material with high chemical and temperature resistance, and is used in sealing gaskets for applications with aggressive chemicals, high temperature and pressure. They are used in applications such as valves, pumps, pipe fittings and chemical processing equipment.

Composite sealing gaskets: These gaskets are made of a combination of materials, such as rubber with metal inserts, PTFE with graphite inserts, among others. They are used in applications where high chemical, thermal and mechanical resistance is required.
